The duodisk cable uses tiny screws where you would expect thumbscrews
to be, and a lot of times these cables get lose because the previous
owner never used a screwdriver. Check it. Heck, I would clean those
connectors too - I once had a spider living on one.
There's also a known issue with older duodisk drives; a resistor needs
to be removed as I recall. Later drives had the fix made at the
factory.
Also, are BOTH drives failing, or just one. If you open the unit, you
can switch the drives around - does the problem follow the drive?
