It seems the eMate has a 25MHz ARM7, which is definitely powerful enough to emulate an Apple II - assuming NewtonOS doesn't impose too much overhead - and I know this from experience. The emulation route is going to be a lot easier than hacking hardware. There's plenty of emulation source code around and C++ tools exist for development. Have fun! Cheers, Nick.
