Have you actually priced Mac products lately? They're fairly comparable to brand name PC products that are similarly equipped. I've at various times with Dell gotten high end Apple products from $200 more to $200 less. (Just don't spend the money on the dealer's RAM...)

Now PC's definitely win on the low end, but that's definitely a stripped machine.

The "low-midrange" desktop these days is a 3GHz HT Pentium, 1GB,
dual-layer universal DVD writer, 128MB video card, 200GB SATA, and
it's about $1000.

The "low-midrange" laptop is a 1.73GHz Pentium M, 512MB, dual-layer
universal DVD writer, 15.4" screen, integrated video, 100GB disk,
and it's about $1100.

Apple prices for comparable power were significantly above these
prices last time I looked. Of course, around the $2000 price
point, things may get more comparable.

But these "low-midrange" machines are as powerful as 98% of computer
buyers need. Only hard-core gamers would want (and use) more.

(Of course, you can always add a TV tuner for $70 or another
250GB SATA drive for $100 if you need it. ;-)

It will be interesting to see if Apple brings its computer
margins more in line as they transition to Intel processors.
Early indications suggest they might.
