The RAM card was pretty simple to design because the GS allowed almost a 
straight bolt on of the 1 meg simms. The only reason it uses a 138 for 
decoding instead of a 139 (would have been a perfect match) is that is what 
I had on my bench at the time for decoding. Bill did great improvement work 
on it to get it to fit without other cards hitting each other.

I personally don't have a Microdrive but I imagine both work just as good as 
the other. Both are good prices as compared to what you would have paid 
years ago.
