Correct.
It uses the MFM drive to sample the GCR signal. A second pass in software
converts the signal to bits, and from there generating Apple II nibbles
is easy.
It appears to work best with a modified drive cable that has connections
to the parallel port, but for 5.25" disks it can work with an unmodified
