I've seen this happen to a lot of naive PC users... not because they are
PC users, of course, but because there are an awful lot of crooked PC
repairmen out there. If your car is out of gas and the mechanic says you
need an engine rebuild a lot of people will believe it. It is not
stupidity, simply a lack of knowledge that makes it so...
Since most "repair" shops won't even look at Macs and most virus/spyware
isn't MacOS compatible then obviously Mac users are less likely to run
into that situation.
Most of my PC-using friends would object to being tagged as morons, but
at least 90% of them have bought a new computer or had a motherboard
replaced because of "virus damage"... never had that problem myself, but
I have been ripped off by the plumber, so I guess that makes me a moron
too ;-)
