This was part of my point, PC users don't value their machines. As soon
as they realize it doesn't work right anymore, they go looking for the
'The Next Big Thing'

Macs, as a class, are used longer, run more applications more often,
and have more second owners. Even when they were more expensive than
PCs, Total-cost-of-ownership studies proved Macs to be cheaper to own,
partly because there was less need for frequent software upgrades. Of
course the real savings have always been in support and repair costs.

Only a month ago I might have argued this point. But I just put a Pismo
back into service that had been replaced with a new G4 because it had a
failing RAM card. Of course, that was only an excuse, but I was
horrified to see someone who wanted to throw away a perfectly good Mac
because it started to crash occasionally. (Strangly enough, the
machine usually worked fine until she tried to run Powerpoint. Only
then, did the RAM fall on its sword!)
