Well, I'm not sure if it was just me or not but when I played Elite on
my IIgs years ago it had a little problem. If you got into a fight
and blew up an opponent's ship the debris would not be erased from
your view screen so after taking out a few ships it was pretty much
impossible to see.

Ah yes, you are right; I forgot about that. I always used to switch
between views quickly after a ship was destroyed to manually refresh
the screen.

Maybe I should use an Apple IIe instead and look into accelerators for
it. Elite on IIe just seems too slow.

Also, I found some information on a few devices that may work for the
"static drive":

AST Ramstak plus - seems like little information on this card, but I
can burn EPROMs, so I would be able to populate the EPROM sockets.
However, there are some jumpers on it and I have no documentation on
how to set them. Anybody using this that can comment on their
performance in ROMdisk mode?

Or maybe this:

It runs Prodos though; maybe there is some way around that.

Then there is this, which looks promising:

I should be able to boot the Elite.dsk image from one of these, right?

If I were doing it, I would plug a CFFA card into a IIgs
and set it up to boot into the game.

Since you only need ProDOS, the boot will take less time than
a CRT will take to warm up. And it completely solves the problem
of saving game state, with no moving parts and no need for cooling.
