What exaclty an IIe enhancement kit is made of ?

I have an appletalk workstation card whose drivers say to work only on a IIe 
enhanced.

I'm wondering what exactly the modification to upgrade to an enhanced  IIe 
was...
Was it simply a ROM upgrade or what other chips are replaced ?

Can I do the upgrade if I find a copy of the newer ROMs ?
