unfortunately...to do it right (and not get yelled at again by the local
cable co company.....) you need to hear my sad sad story

in a local monopoly in a computer time far away (1998)....a small peasant
revolt, victory....and the downfall....

the story....on why the bbs www lost gonzo www site may be gone for good...

I helped a nonlocal isp get access here.(mankato, mn) and the local cable
company and teleco got.competion ....(how do you think i got the free T1
access for the old www.lost-gonzo.com bbs.from 1998 to 2002 i've been told
by people who happen to like me...tech types) that if i ever get a
cablemodem with dyn ip i'm toast...(or dsl for that matter the local teleco
is also not thrilled with my non-local isp fix in this area)....that if it
is a dyn ip of a gonzo site ..they will watch traffic...just as a courtesy
to me...wink wink..i will be squashed like the bbs sysop bug they take me
for...

of course ..no good idea (or scam) goes unpunished..its my own fault for
having a work around and get a free T1 in 1998.....so from 1998 to 2002 i
had a free bbs T1 to use...but .the non-local isp (worked for like 4yrs)..i
did this with ... he got bought out by some big corp..the tech dept where i
had my little T1 arrangement to my house..got outsourced along with the tech
dept to sioux falls, sd (thats how it works in minnesota..minnesota is bad
enough for stuff to do and the winter....our version of a 3rd world country
is south dakota)...anyway the T1 went bye bye...the other sysops all got
real jobs other places...(how dare they get a life and leave
town...sigh..)...and so..this is my lot..but i had down the umentionable..i
had messed with the forces that be around here teleco wise..


if the gonzo went back up in all its glory (ie free majormud etc) and got
swamped which is what my ego would expect...(hehe) and i suddenly started
getting like 40 users constantly online and 200 calls a day...i'm fairly
sure a cable co /combo phone co hit squad would swing into action...they
don't like that sorta thing and it is small enough area they would find
out...prob within a week..doomed...

(know heck...its a sure bet)

so i'm back in that time of monoply days (1998) where the telecos (dsl) and
the cablemodem types (3mb/750mbs) ....have again (same as from 1995 on)
offered what used to be a 14.4 slip connection up to today the cable
3mb/740mps.....version of what they call

"the business package" the speeds change upward...the price stays the same
as 1998 at the 14.4 slip connection $125 a month with another $25 a month
for a dialup account (what they call test accnt) tossed in ..in case you
have tech trouble with your ded line..again same plan diff speeds....etc etc

a static ip then on now under the business plan is $125 a month....there is
no residential static ip plan..and gee...both the cable folks and the
teleco..both have it at the same price..quite a coincidence....admitedly the
speed etc has gone up..but...if you are trying to run a bbs/web site by
yourself ..with no sysops...it cannot be swung by just me...at that
price..no matter how fast a connection the business plan eventually becomes

thus my yelling about having to start a retro computer club around here...it
was one thing to pay $125 a month...in the past with like 4 or 5 sysops
splitting the bill...its another for me to do it alone

thus my prev calls for an apple // collector (rich one) (hi woz.....naw he
prob don't read this newsgroup anymore..it would be like the inventor of the
calculator to get in the collectible vintage newsgroup) to move to mankato
and save me from this peril....of sysop withdrawl he is my only hope...

anyway its a matter of $$$ and thus i seem (w/o other sysops) to have
painted my plans of getting the bbs back up in a corner of the room


so i collect apple2 stuff..and have  enough time to chat on here..posting to
newsgroups (i am allowed to do that at my job at nite)  and teach (for free
what else) a local shotokan karate club at the university 3x a week....and
muddle along...co-sysop less....

the future wants everyone to be dyn ip..so that they can serve www pages and
charge you for it (satellite is all dyn ip..or at least in my price
range)...all these little pesky www servers and bbs's are annoying to big
business ....my example of the T1 in my house offering a non-local isp at
the time..as an example...one of my fondest memories ..is after tying to get
a non-profit rate for the bbs back in the day or co-hosting with the local
teleco or cablemodem place etc etc when it was back in the 14.4 slip
connection days (1998) of 125 a month for static ip..i was basically scoffed
at...but it was guite the scene when i went into the local teleco in fall of
1998 and had like 4 vp types involved (ie they did NOT believe me) and
announce that i needed a T1 put into my house forth with peons..here is who
i represent and the 2K fee is forthcomming...don't believe me call
them..(they did) ...much wringing of hands and laminations ...i had brought
a dark force into the land the teleco monopoly a 3rd ISP..but now there are
3 isp's here...the one i was involved in has a remote hosting solution with
guest and of couse S.D. ..equipment was tearfully removed from my house fall
of 2002...and .i was left aside like a badly used maid...sigh....crushed
like a star wars saga....

but that still had to be the most fun i had (or prob ever will have) getting
a connection of any kind from the local teleco company...my only regret is i
did not either bring a pocket tape recorder or have a micheal moore like
video crew made up by local computer nerds to record the event...the
non-local isp who was working with me ..they suffered the same fate
more/less they got bought out by someone bigger and eaten up ...and jobs
lost moved etc etc....all the free T1 stuff etc was done on a handshake
....at the time...now i just have the lonely equip (and t1 line) hanging
from the outside of my house .....

so someone want to move to mankato to get the bbs backup and get a univ
degree and also train in shotokan karate..this is the
place...otherwise...i'm just looking for  a rope back out of this hole

i have managed to get the system somewhat back up internally so it all
more/less works...still working on the apple // stuff ..some needs to be
networked again.....and prob need to re-build the bbs file areas and def
need to do the old adt xfer to the said file section of bbs of .dsk shk
apple // disks...(if for no other reason to backup and mainly just ease to
find stuff again...bbs file areas are nice that way..for finding stuff)

anyway i'm screwed...(but at  least i had a T1 courtship for awhile)....ah
the good old  days

so it has swung around to 1998 again...still $125 a month for a ded ip..and
more for side the side  dialup test  account too...and they ban for life
abuses of cable co privlages around here (pirate cable..you never get it
again....break dyn ip stuff..never get cable again..as long as you live in
that address) they are guite good at it..mainly because of the local
universtiy kids trying to do this all the time...to the local cable
company...and the local teleco....is one of those nice protected ones....so
no competion can put them out of business the local teleco protection
plan..very profitable..1/4 of the 40k of people here are univ students...in
the fall they turn the phones on with a switch at the office...and in the
spring they turn them off....both ways its a 40 to 50 buck charge...no
infrastruture costs (we are in a valley) .....very profitable...someone told
me it was the most profitable private phone teleco in the country once...

the powers of darkness have won....(frigging lord of the rings ...bbs wise
don't ya know)

anyway...maybe someday i'll find 3 to 4 more foo...er i mean sysops to
charge windmills again....or find time to get a retro computer club
going...but its been 2yrs since the bbs went down (9/21/2002) ...so i an't
moving too fast
