Double-density disks would be your culprit, it looks like. Many folks
have made mention of the fact that DD disks need a bit more magnetic
"oomph" to write to them than what the Apple drives (originally designed
for single-density media) can put out. The difference is the magnetic
media used on single versus double-density disks. The coating on a
single-density disk is more "susceptible" to being (de)magnetized than
that on a double-density disk.
