16K is more likely, and it would be in slot 0. Language cards were set up with a cable to a RAM socket, just like the OP described. I have a Microsoft (!) 16K language card in my II+ that has some LEDs across the top, and the chip count sounds right (nine of the chips are 4116 DRAMs--eight to form a bank of memory, plus one to replace the chip pulled off the motherboard).
Ok, Slot 0, then. The language card description sounds accurate (cable to a RAM socket). I'll be taking a closer look this week, when I have a spare moment. I can get some chip numbers, etc. and will post them here. Maybe you or Michael Mahon can give me a better idea what I've got.
