Bitchin'! There's one last concern before I try this: How does one use a
fixed disk (or removable HDD for that matter) with a IIe?! Well... What
I mean by that is the setting up and formatting etc... I'm thinking it
doesn't work too well with DOS 3.3?
I've never even seen a IIe with a hard drive. You've made a n00b of me. ;)
Using a hard drive with DOS 3.3 is a little awkward but it has been
done. DOS 3.3 was designed for 5.25" floppies and doesn't work well
with media over 400mb. Apple did create ProDOS which works with volumes
up to 32mb in size and you can have more than one volume. So you can
have more than one drive or you can partition a drive into multiple 32mb
partitions. Early versions of ProDOS would only allow you two partitions
for a hard drive but later versions would reasign the partitions to any
slot without a disk drive or RAMdisk.
There is a utility that will let you store and boot some DOS 3.3
programs off a hard drive. Copy protected ones are among the ones you
can't.
I have a hard drive and CD-ROM attached to my IIe. I prefer ProSel 8 as
a program launcher though there's quite a few choices available. While
it is possible to read HFS CDs, I use ProDOS CDs that I burn with a Mac.
The CDs are partitioned and my backup ones are bootable.
