DOS 3.3 was obsolete at least 18 years ago. While there are some hacks
(IIRC) that let you use a HD with DOS 3.3, you'll be much better off using
ProDOS. It supports much larger filesystem sizes (up to 32 MB) and allows
you to set up a hierarchical directory structure to organize your files.
DOS 3.3 was limited to less than 1 MB per filesystem and used a flat
directory structure. It was barely passable with 5.25" floppies that held
140K (280K if you notched them); it'd be intolerable with anything larger.
Utility software came with most SCSI cards back in the day to partition and
format drives; the current crop of IDE cards should have something similar.
If you buy one of the "hardcards" that are available (such as a Focus), the
drive should already be set up; all you'll have to do is plug it in and fire
up the computer.
