I wouldn't go so far as to call it superior - just simpler, faster and
easier on disk space...

That depends on the program... or the programmer... you can be very
thrifty with 64K or terribly wasteful with 8 mb and end up with the same
functionality. Of course GS software doesn't compare to modern software
in terms of bloating and inefficiency.
