Another way, you get spam is when your ISP sells their client information to
third-parties. Read the ISP and other contracts, carefully for any hidden
clauses that allows disclosure of personal information, including e-mail
addresses to other companies.

Even registrating your software invites spam, I lost track how many times I got
spam from companies wanting to sell newer versions of their software or a rival
product with special discounts (always for a limited time), a long list of
updated features (the usual promotional crap of "working better and faster") and
quotes from supposedly customers about how marvellous it all is!
