And this is where I disagree. I think bringing this kind of PC
bashing into the Apple II community is just as destructive
as the folks who bring in Mac bashing.
I take it you went from Apple IIGS to Macintosh. To me,
there is nothing wrong with you for doing this. But know
that a lot of Apple IIGS user, disillusioned with Apple's
treatment of its own Apple II user base went to the PC
and we love using the PC.
It is true that Apple IIGS does not equal PC. But neither
does a Mac equal a IIGS. The only thing the IIGS and
Mac share is the parent company.
It is funny, I am an avid PC user because I like PC
hardware. I like assembling components, upgrading
hard drives and motherboards and the like. The reason
I like assembling PC components is because I played
around with a lot of such hardware when I was a IIGS
user and that was because the IIGS was very open
in terms of the system assembler's hands on
experience. Except for the proprietary motherboard,
all peripheral cards had third party versions.
As the IIGS market dried up and the Apple II died of
Apple's neglect, I had a choice between PC or Mac.
I chose PC because I was burned by Apple and I
am perfectly content with my decision.
The power that can be put in the hands of ordinary
users is incredible and there are many decent
companies who deserve our support. Don't like
Intel? Hey, I am an AMD fan. But to Mac users,
AMD is the same as Intel. Why is that? AMD's
Athlon processor was a ground up design and it
is incredibly efficient compared to the P4 and the
upcoming Opteron and Athlon 64 processors are
again ground up designs. Oh, and the big evil
Microsoft? Well, ok there is some truth to problems
with their business practices and hey, I am a
fan of Corel products and Netscape/Mozilla. But
I have no problem using their OS.
Apple II users who became Mac users and love the
Mac, good for you. But Apple II users who were
burned by Apple and are avid PC users, WE are
NOT the enemies.
The IIGS was a great machine that I used for
many years. I consider myself a diehard IIGS fan.
But I am also a PC and not a Mac fan and I am
no fan of what Apple Computers has become.
That does NOT change the fact that I am a IIGS
fan.
So yes, I agree, leave the Mac bashing out of the
IIGS discussions but please, also leave out the
endless PC bashing I see here.
