I think it's called "water slide" or something like that. That would
probably work nicely, but might need a clear coat to protect it.
Another idea I thought about is something like those LetraSet sheets that
you can rub patterns or text off an acetate like sheet onto a smooth
surface.
Also http://www.papilio.com/ has a wide variety of interesting print media
for lots of creative projects.
