Apple hasn't made it impossible.  Apple just doesn't update their older 
OSes to support the new hardware.  In the Apple world, the hardware and 
the OS are tightly integrated.  You can't update the hardware without 
updating the OS.  Apple wouldn't see any profit by spending the time and 
the money to update what they consider to be outdated OSes.
