Now take the original IBM. Is it compatible with a System/360? Is it
compatible with an IBM 701? That is a dreadful compatibility record.
When comparing the product line of Apple to IBM compatible computers,
you have to keep in mind that you are comparing them to a platform which
is defined by certain features. In fact, I would suggest to you that
many established computer companies have made incompatible products over
their history.

Now to go off topic:

Actually, your statement is simply not true. It is easy to install
several versions of the Macintosh operating system on one partition or
on several partitions. Tools like the extension manager make it
possible to install the same version of the same operating system with
quite different configurations. It is also quite easy to install
different operating systems of different partitions (like Linux or
NetBSD).
