Just a quick note on this...I think that the boot volume is stored in 
the PRAM and the system folder to be used is stored on the HD.  On Macs 
with the New World ROM, you can hold down the option key at boot-up and 
select which hard drive you want to boot from.  I have two partitions on 
my laptop and copies of OS X and OS 9 on both, but in the selection menu 
I get from holding down the option key, I can only boot into the OS that 
was already selected for booting on that particular volume.

Probably something like what you could do with a RamFast.  Wouldn't know 
for certain as I never had one.  (Had to throw something Apple II 
related in here.)
