Doh! Shouldn't try to use my brain at the end of a crazy week like
this! my brain cells are all sleeping right now.

I just realized, you said you already dumped ADT to the IIGS. so it's
obviously not the terminal/modem jumper.

Here's another thing that may or may not help: I know you set up the
port settings in Hyperterminal, but just to be sure, I also made those
the default settings for the com port in the control panel -> system
properties -> device manager -> ports -> com1 (or whichever port
you're using) :             8,N,1 and 19200 bps
