The manufacturers recomended slots 4, 5, and 7. I discovered slots I used to use slot 3 on a IIe. 1 and 2 also worked if you don't want to use a printer or modem. Slot 6 was reserved for a floppy drive.

Actually, because the Applicard doesn't map into the slot ROM space, it will work in any slot. Unless I'm growing senile (possible), I think I remember it working in Slot 3 of a IIgs when set to "internal"! You generally need to perform surgery on a GS to even fit the thing in - but that's another story.
