Maybe it is a bit more simplistic of a view, but I tend to think it
was the support of command line that killed the II line. Face it, the
Mac has always been a completely GUI environment with no hint of
dropping out of it for anything. You have the mouse as the main form
of movement and everything else is a pretty display. I tend to think
that if the Mac offered some form of getting "behind the scenes" the
Macs would've been more accepted. Heck, even up to Windows ME x86
users still could use Dos. Now with OS X they are presenting it as
if it was something great for the Mac.
Maybe creating an OS/HW combo that was so strictly controlled was
what they were going for. Get rid of all the tinkerers for the sake
of the commercial developers. Just my take on it. Perhaps if the IIgs
make a clean break of ProDos and Dos, it would've been seen in a
better light with management.
