You give Tom WAY too much credit.  The root cause was obsolete hardware.
People don't write software for obsolete hardware- at least not if they want
to make money. People don't invest a lot of money in obsolete hardware with
a declining market share.  For example, today the Mac survives only because
the hardware is cutting edge.

I'm a moron? You're the guy who thinks one odd-ball named Tom had a major
impact on the demise of the Apple II.  That's laughable.  And I just told
you I bought my first computer in '90, after carefully considering all
factors. It was a no-brainer to avoid the obsolete 8-bit and 16-bit Apple
II's when 32 bit machines were the standard at the time.  It was a
no-brainer for programmers to switch to platforms that were growing instead
of declining, too.  Tom had nothing to do with it.
