I have several of these--they're my favorite Apple II joysticks.   There are
selectors on the underside of the joystick that let you select OpenApple or
Closed Apple for each of the three buttons.

<< I think I still have my Apple II Gravis like you pictured above and
I'm pretty sure the button on the stick is button 0 and the buttons on
the base are button 0 and 1 so it is another instance of extra buttons
being there for convenience.
