I use my IIGS to connect to the net, and I've never felt a need to
purchase a modem faster than a 14.4. I use foxvalley.net, which is an
Apple II friendly ISP. Not only that, but I'm 2000 miles away from
foxvalley but I dial up a local number to get my shell access. I pay 6
months in advance, so it's only about $16/month.
Check out http://www.foxvalley.net and look to see if they have local
access numbers where you live.
