Sorry, I have almost run out of ideas, especially since you indicate
AppleTalk works on slot 1 (set to your card) and you HDD is working in slot
2 (set to your card)
The only last thing I can think of is:
1. Your HDD is not compatable with this setup, like the Focus and AHS are,
or
2. Maybe you have slot 1 and 2 set to your card and the GS is trying to use
the printer port for AppleTalk but it's now in the modem port. Try just
setting slot 2 as your card, and slot 1 as printer.
3. I can't remember if there is a place on the GS where you specify what
slot/port to use for AppleTalk, but if there is set it to modem port. I had
a similar problem with my Mac when I wanted to swap AppleTalk ports from the
printer port to the modem port. I have to disable it, then set up my printer
on another port then re-enable AppleTalk.

Can you try a different HDD like the Focus, I know you would have tried this
if it was an option, but I at the bottom of the barrel now.
