We've always been a republic...since day one.  We have never been a 
'Democracy'.

And it didn't start around 1950...it started in the '30s with FDR
increasing the power of the government.

We have a President who won the election on two legitimate counts,
there was four recounts done by the media afterwards, and Al Gore
won two and G. W. Bush won two...who's to say which one of them won
at that point.  Doing a full manual recount in Florida would have
been just about impossible...there were no standards for doing a
recount before the election, so it was up to each election board to
decide how to do the recount.  That was primarily what the Supreme
Court ultimately ruled on...that to do a recount under those
conditions would be unfair, mostly to the people of Florida.
