Re: Arghhhh with PC--->Apple over Null Modem Cable

Marvin,

I can't believe you went to that much trouble and it didn't work. Sounds
very messy. I think you have probably got two null modems in series there,
which is why it may not work. I would try connecting just the first cable
between your GS and PC first, as I suspect it is already a null modem cable.
Do you know if it is or not ?

I could send the pinouts of my serial transfer cable if you want to check it
with a multi meter.

I bought a 1.8M (6ft) "Apple to PC" data transfer cable (null modem) from
WES (in Australia) for only $6AUD (about $3US) + $7AUD postage. They have
minidin-8 to DB9F, or minidin-8 to DB25F. I got the DB9F version as you can
just add an DB9M-DB25F adapter at the PC end to fit the larger serial plug
if you need to. This cable also works between my PC and Mac LCII. I also
made a 15M (50ft) 5-wire one from some old data cable, and added a couple of
plugs at each end, cost about the same. I got the cable for free from gash.
I use this one for long distance transfers between my PC upstairs to my GS
downstairs, and visa-versa.

On the PC, Hyperterminal or Terminal is included with Windoze. If you arc
that up first, then on the Apple end from Basic prompt ']' you can type PR#2
(or PR#1, if that's where your cable is) and bash away at the GS keyboard
and hopefully see text on your PC screen.
This is a pretty good indicator that the cable is OK. Make sure the Control
Panel is set to Modem for that port, not printer. Also the baud rates,
parity, data, stop bits must be the same. If you get garbled characters then
it's usually a baud rate problem or too fast. 9600 is a good place to start.
