Re: Building An Apple ][ Software Archive

Mr. Lancaster would know! :-)

Many of my favorite programs are 8 bit so I guess I spend more time in 8
bit mode than it sounds like. I have been (still) browsing the files on
the 'Time in a Bottle' release. A lot of these are GSOS oriented and offer
a lot of possibilities for customizing the system. Unfortunately, memory
constraints limit my machine and I don't want to purchase a new ram card
just yet.

Speed wise, my GS is faster, Transwarp 7 mhz vs IIe Transwarp 3 mhz and my
2c 1.2 mhz speeds but that is not a factor to me. Often the speeds through
off the balance of program designs. I mostly find this useful when
programming with compilers. I have extra ram for both my 8 bit systems so
that doesn't matter much either and the GS monitor, while great for SHR
does little to help the HGR/DHR video modes. In fact, I have set my video
to monochrome mode so DHR programs will be viewable.

Sometimes it seems like the GS was a middle step up the II ladder but
Apple Inc never finished building the ladder. This may be why I enjoy
reading about folks who have dreams about a newer II compatible system.
We may never see such a system, but it's neat to imagine what could be.

I can't deny the advantages of the GS and GSOS. Esp' when using the Apple
scsi cdrom drive to access files in the HFS system. With this and my PC
I can make my own archive CD's and I will be able to protect my software
collection, for my lifetime at least. And, while this system is a joy to
use, it still doesn't seem the same as all the tinkering I spent on the
2c.

Well, maybe this will change some. I am finally going to attempt to
understand the complexities of the GS Toolbox system. I recently acquired
a copy of Lichty and Eyes, Programming the GS in Assembly Language. Of
course, I know it may take some other reference books to make any real
use of this, but it is a start.
