Well, it's a necessity in the sense that a lot of people will not
install an operating system unless it has a GUI, even if you give
the OS away. Also, navigating the Web without a graphical browser
is getting more and more difficult.

You can get command-line interfaces for MacOS, they just aren't
marketed to non-developers. I missed the CLI when I had to use
(not program) a Mac for a long time, but not as much as I thought
I would.
