At this point, you could probably, safely assume that every one is
using slot 3 for the 80 column card. But one thing I've learned, when
programming, never assume anything and follow the rules as much as
possible. When you can't follow the rules, make sure that the code
you write to circumvent them is as bullet proof as possible. Because,
someone will inevitably not follow the standards and try to run the
program which will fail to function properly. Even though part of the
fault is the persons, they will have a bad impression of your program
and no matter what you do, they will always have this impression that
the program is junk.

It is of course, your choice as the programmer, but many of the
problems in the early days of computing, and for the Apple2 in
particular, were due to a lack of standards and everyone thinking
that their way was the best way.
