I just tried it on a ROM 01 here and the click isn't very audible to
begin with but it is there regardless of whether there is 5.25" drive
attached or whether the AppleDisk5.25 driver is active or not.
I guess the ROM 01 motherboard might be picking up the polling of the
3.5" drive too. I couldn't easily hook up a hard drive and disconnect
both the 5.25" and 3.5" drives to test this theory.
It could also be that the click is caused by something else the
computer is doing. After all, you can here other activity like
pulling down menus and such so we might have been barking up the wrong
tree for years. :-)
By the way, I couldn't get my ROM 3 to make any clicks or other noises
even with the volume turned all the way up and listening with a pair
of good quality headphones plugged into the headphone jack.
