Re: XGS/32 v1.4b Released!

Well, first, I never said I didn't like MS. I use Windows
on most of my machines. I program with several versions
of Visual Basic, from the 16 bit version 3 to the 32 bit
version 6. I also develop database apps with Access 97. I
have also built networks using the 9x OS and the PC which
work on those networks.

Personally, I prefer Linux. That's probably the hacker in
me. I understand the ease of use offered by MS programs.
I was one of the first in my area to espouse the use of
Windows for the average user. I remember the early Windows
386 version from before Windows was even known to the
common user. It was a difficult, bug ridden program, but
even then I knew it was the interface of the future for the
common user.

Your points about using Linux are also valid. Unfortunately,
most users don't want to learn more about their machines.
They simply want to turn them on and click and work. This
is too bad as it takes a lot of the fun out of computers.

I think part of the problem with the X system and GUI's is
the differences in each of them. Windows main strength is
the similarity between the OS and the Apps. So far KDE is
the only one to come close.

You choice of programming platforms is a personal matter.
I have also used many different systems. I think it really
depends on what you want done. With many of the newer
languages, you have to pick one and stick with it as each
has a steep learning curve. Between learning the language
and the development environment it can be very difficult. My
only point is the ability to create apps which can be used on
a variety of platforms.

As a programmer, I applaud any programmer and the work
they do. Until you have written a real application you have
no idea how much effort goes into them. I think that's my
biggest complaint about MS systems and programming for
them. The users don't appreciate the effort that goes into
creating a software system which they don't have to think
about.

Well, we could probably take this discussion into the next
millennium, but I expect other readers are going to complain
about this PC thread.
