: Appleshare 2.x or 3.x for macs is required to pull this off. As
: that was commercial software (costing $1K a pop), and now replaced by
: newer versions that can't be bothered to support Apple IIs, good luck
: finding it. And only those who can't be bothered to bother doing
: anything more than minor work would think that Appleshare is "fast"
: enough to do real work over.
Corrections:
1. Appleshare still supports Apple II clients, just not network startup.
2. I've seen copies of Appleshare 3 for as little as $69 in forsale groups.
3. Appleshare is more than fast enough for most uses, and is adequate in
the rest. I use an Appleshare server to boot my ROM 01 when I use it instead
of devoting an expensive enclosure and drive to it. I can make more productive
use of such parts.
: Get a real HD for the GS and really support it. Focus drives are
: $59 from Alltech Electronics, which is way faster and almost certainly
: cheaper than using a mac as an expensive paperweight with a HD.
You can get a 4 mb Mac Plus for as little as $20 these days and system 7.0.1
(which does filesharing) is free.
: >How easy is it to connect a GS and a MAC+ with only a straight through cable

: With a printer cable, such as for an IWII, that'll work for only 2
: devices once the appropriate software is installed on both ends. More
: than that, better shell out for phonenet cabling. ['Real' appletalk
: cabling is 3 wires, not the 8pin jacks in the back of the computer,
: but Apple (surprise) charged thru the nose for that, and couldn't lock
: down the market enough to prevent cloners from doing a better job, as
: usual.]
Apple actively provides third party vendors with opportunities, putz. E.g.
supporting up to 4 mb of memory expansion in a IIgs while not manufacturing
a 4 mb card themselves.
: >And allow me to boot from the Mac?
: The cabling has nothing to do with net booting. That's a software
: issue thanks to Apple trying to charge schools $$$ to make Apple IIs
: more usable. And no courage to admit it after the fact that they
: strangled the goose that laid the golden eggs for them and be nice to
: those still using it.
Whatever you say.
