Is the source of Nathan's rants about 5D sound again Tom? If that's the
case, I'd find it strange, since I couldn't find a single instance of
5D sound in it. But if he really meant 4D sound all along, I can't really
see any problem with it... 4D is, basically, just a fancy way of saying
3D sound played for more than an instant... ie. so it has a time base as well.
Indeed, I can't see any reason why you couldn't design a 3D 'surround sound'
system with an eye for special time processing. A good example is the system
used by LucasArts... IMuse, I think it is, that enables changing from one
music theme to another without any sharp cuts, so it all sounds smooth. 
Something like that added to a 3D system could legimately claim to be 4D.
