Renaming

I'm trying to rename my boot partition, but I'm not having much luck. 
Whether I from the partition or another system disk, after I rename the
partition and reboot I get a [text screen] message asking me to insert
volume xxx, where xxx is the previous name of my partition.  Is there some
trick I should know about?
