Help with modem please

I'm planning to buy a modem for my good ol' apple ][ europlus.
However, i found that i don't know enough about modems for apple][ :
can i pug in a modem in my apple which has got only 64k and 2 disks?
is there a modem which would plug in directly into a slot or do i always
need
some piece of hardware in-between?
what is the max. baudrate i should go for?
what is good software which would turn my apple into a vt100, and which
could do a telnet and ftp?

well, enough questions for the moment :)
any hints, enlightenments, and other input will be very appreciated.
