i've got an apple tech/repair story a local apple business was
involved...

looking in the local home/swap mag free paper of garage sales etc..i saw
an ad for a (broken) apple //e make offer..i called them up and offered
them 35 bucks i think for it....this was around 1991 when a //e system
still garnered maybe 200 bucks or more...

the guy brought it over it was a //e platinum w/keyboard and had a
mono monior and a dual disk drive w/unidisk card cable etc 80 col card

so anyway ....he told me that he had taken it in to the dealer
repeatedly and the disk drive would never boot...the componets of the
drive etc worked on other //e systems but not on his cpu..first the
apple tech put in a new pwr supply, then a new logic board then a new
keyboard then a new unidisk cable....he said that unidisk drive 2 never
worked in that it was used....so sometimes the tech could get it to work
sometimes not....so they gave him his money back and due to the fact
that they had lost their apple dealership or dumped it..the last time he
made an attempt to get it fixed...they told him they were no longer with
apple and to just keep it. (i also tried to get their old apple stuff
they could not return to apple rather then donate it to my bbs or even a
local school the techs smashed it...bright boys)...i gather apple makes
a dealership keep so much in stock for parts and they would not
re-emburse them for the apple // stuff they had in tech room

so i look in side...newest looking used apple i ever saw...no dust or
anything..even smelled new...looked fine...i plugged it in and ran a
self check..no problem...i looked in the back and plugged the unidisk
cable in drive 1 spot from drive 2 spot...and viola booted up fine....
the tech had either not bothered to detach the unidisk cable or just
continued to plug it in the same spot 2 spot...and drive 2 was dead on
that unit....or a dual unidisk will only boot from drive 1 prob that...
and it worked fine..i asked him if he wanted it back ..he had an ibm and
had his $$$ from the dealer...so...i got a brand new //e cause the apple
registered tech...(remember this is when they were still selling the
platiunm //e's i think to school teachers etc)....

the registered tech...really did not have a clue....they would pay those
guys maybe 1 buck more the min wage and they just swapped componets till
they got it right....and would send suspect stuff back...it was pretty
pathetic....

whatever...i've a buddy who has it and he is still using it every other
day..no problems....that is when i pretty much gave up on apple.
