You can have your cake and eat it too, though. :-) The true upgrade from a IIe
to a IIGS is to stick a GS motherboard (ROM 01 only) into a IIe case. That's
what I did; my IIe keyboard (and even my IIe numeric keypad--the old 24-key
model that sits outside the case) work fine with the GS motherboard once you
add the appropriate connectors to their places on the board. You can also add
a connector to the GS motherboard so that the IIe power supply plugs right in,
or you can hack a GS-compatible connector onto your IIe power supply's cable.
A IIe keyboard plugged into a IIGS motherboard is true nirvana. :-)
