That extra electronics is the SmartSwitch.  The RCA marked A is for
automatic switching between 40 and 80 column modes and the RCA manrke M
is for manual switching between 40 and 80 column.  I recommend using
the manual connection and using the toggle switch to select whether you
look at the 40 column signal from the II+ motherboard or the 80 column
signal from the Videx card.
