You seem to have a mix of the soft and hard switch for the 80 col card.
The little card is a softswitch. If a program supports 80 col, the
software causes the little card to switch the 80 col video to the monitor
rather than the normal 40 col video. The toggle switch does the same
manually. I have the manual (possibly for sale) if you are interested.
