   Hmmmm. On my system, I can get various types of humming/etc from my
system, but it's the power supply misbehaving. (I unplugged my speaker
and turned off the speakers connected to my stereo card; if my system
is generating enough RF interference to make the speaker go off on its
own accord while in the case, things are worse than I thought ;) Just
ignore it...

   This should be in the FAQ postings, but it usually means that the
ssystem is overheating. You said that removing an extra memory board
helped; those chips pump out heat. Here's a list of suggestions to
help with IIGS heat problems, from simplest to most expensive:

- Open up IIGS, remove all dust by blowing it off, wiping (dry
kleenex), dustbustering.

- Remove covers on expansion ports in back. Turn the metal clasps
90 degrees clockwise, and get a whole bunch of extra holes in back
of your GS.

- On the bottom front of the monitor, the bar (roughly 12 inches x
1 inch x 1/4 inch) can be removed and put back edgewise, making the
monitor slope up, and more space between the GS and monitor.

- Run the GS without the top on it. This will probably cause a lot of
havoc with local TVs, radios, etc.

- (This has really worked for me). Point a 6" desk/clip-on fan down at
the top of the monitor. It seems that when the monitor is kept cool,
heat can rise up out of the GS much better.

- Buy a fan system that fits between the GS & monitor. Kensington's
System Saver is one of the best, but probably discontinued now.

   I personally have a System Saver, clip-on fan (mounted on bookshelf
above IIGS), and the monitor up on edge. Never had a 0911 since I
added the clip-on fan...
