The ProDOS 8 tech note titled "ProDOS 8 changes and minuteia" (I forget the
number of the note) says that the first version of the kernel that can't
run in 48K is 1.1. As I said, every version requires 64K and Applesoft ROMs
for BASIC to run. That's why the 64K ][+ is mentioned. But there's nothing
to stop version 1.0 of the kernel from running in a 48K integer-only ][.
Naturally, not being able to run BASIC or any large system programs will make
it not useful, but a 48K integer-only ][ can't be expected to be very useful.
