Not true.  I use 6.0.1 on a 1.25 meg ROM 1 with no problems.  A hard 
drive and more RAM are only needed if you want to use all the features of 
6.0.1.  But if you just want to boot into the Finder, minimum systems 
work fine.

You can also get 6.0.1 via anonymous ftp from ftp.apple.com.  System 
5.0.4 is available there too if you need it.
