Well, since you mention it, if your program is running from DOS, it
has intercepts in place that it wants to maintain--so you shouldn't
use naked IN#2 and PR#3 commands; you should use ?CHR$(4)"PR#2" so
that DOS actually does the command, and keeps its pointers straight.

Ah, that's interesting. Giving that a try seems to work for 40col mode,
but not for 80col. To use the 80col card I just need to issue

?CHR$(4)"PR#3"

yes? Because if I write this code:

10 ?CHR$(4)"PR#3"
20 ?CHR$(4)"IN#2"
30 GET A$
40 PRINT A$;
50 GOTO 30

then it stays in 40col mode until I hit a key on the PC keyboard,
whereupon it goes into 80col, displays the key, then nothing more.

Do I need to initialise the 80col card in some other way? TEXT:HOME
perhaps?

The PR#3 initialization should take care of that.

In other news, I've got another serial card coming to me (sadly not an
SSC, but it's got to be worth a try) and another 80col card - perhaps
mine is not quite happy.

The serial card is an 'Aristocard'. Google turns up nothing, which bodes
:-)

Many thanks.

Hope you get it working!
