Thank you, that is now very close to working.

The only real issue I have now is that when in 80col mode, there's no
cursor but there is a white block with a ` in it in the second col. And
it persists there. Typing tracks left to right, starting one to the left
of this block, then overwriting it with the correct (but reverse videod)
letter, then continuing on normally. Oddly, numbers typed in that column
get corrupted, so starting a new line and typing '123456' (without the
quotes) gives '1r3456' with the 'r' being reverse-videod, but typing 'hi
there' gives you 'hi there' but with the 'i' reversed.

Any idea what that would be? I'm using 9600 8N1 as the comms settings
for now.
