I tried a very simple programme thus:

10 TEXT:HOME
20 IN#2
30 GET A$
40 PRINT A$;
50 GOTO 30

It correctly gets and displays the first character, but nothing
afterwards. Comms seem ok in all other respects.

I don't see a problem with your program...

Are you sending starting with a low rate, like 300bps, and
working up?

Granted no, I've tried 9600 and 4800, but both of those work fine when
just typing IN#2 and typing at a prompt. It's as though GET is doing
something different somehow.

Could it be a handshaking issue? I suspect I'm either using no
handshaking or hardware handshaking.

One other problem that you may need to address: when the display
reaches the bottom of the screen and the last character causes
a scroll-up, the time taken for the scroll will cause an input
character or two to be missed if the data rate is above a pretty
low threshold.
