Perhaps it's worth considering an NMI detect upgrade for the IIe ?
Something that would detect an unusual keystroke and fire the NMI. You
need to patch into the keyboard connector and patch the ROM (perhaps
remove the essentially useless self-test routine)

Or perhaps it's just too much work. Would certainly be the most
seemless way to do it though.
